'Sunamganj girls will get in shape, no one ever thinks'

There was no place for sesame in the auditorium of the National Sports Council building even on holiday evenings.  The song is playing loudly.  And Maksuda Akhter, Nusrat Meem, Poppy Rani Das are giving 'poses' in different styles to the tune of the song.  Crowds flocked to the gallery to watch the open women's section of the national bodybuilding competition.

Although the men's bodybuilding competitions are regular, the Bangladesh Bodybuilding Federation has organized bodybuilding for girls for only three years.  For the third time, a maximum of 14 women came from different parts of Bangladesh.

This time Maksuda Akhter has become the champion for the second time in a row in the national bodybuilding competition.  The runner-up is Nusrat Meem of Ruslan Studios.  Poppy Rani Das won bronz

Poppy, a girl from Sunamganj, won bronze for the first time.  If a girl from a district outside Dhaka would come and take part in a bodybuilding competition, it was not easy for Poppy.

"Naturally, my parents didn't agree at first," said Poppy, who was thrilled to win the medal.  My sister has been the most supportive in this regard.  I could not have come here without his help.  Honestly, a girl from Sunamganj district will come up and get down in this way, no one ever thought of that.  But I did it.  I want to go farther. "

Sister Parul Das, who was standing next to Poppy, said with a smile, "Poppy had a strong inclination towards bodybuilding.  Whoever likes the work should be allowed to do it.  I explained it to my parents.  They did not agree to anything.  Later, however, they allowed him to go to the gym a few days later.  I am more than happy to see Poppy with the medal. '

Apart from football and cricket, girls are performing well in many personal sports.  Why did you choose bodybuilding with so much competition?

Poppy said that he came to his body shape by his own choice, ‘Suddenly my body weight was increasing.  Since then I have become more aware of the body.  Let's start doing gym.  When I started the gym, diet, I thought, why not take part in the competition! '

Poppy, who studied at BBA in Sylhet, was suffering from nervousness at the beginning.  However, the audience gave good encouragement.  Then my fear disappeared. '

Where Poppy was suffering from a nervous breakdown, Maksuda, who eventually became the champion, was confident from the start.  It has to happen!  A few days ago, Maksuda became the third runner-up in the International Amateur Olympia in Mumbai.  Then he took part in this competition in Dhaka.  Maksuda was confident of becoming the champion.

He was happy to retain the medal, saying, "I am happy to be the champion again.  But it is good to see that Bangladeshi girls have become interested in bodybuilding. '

India's Olympic gold, Bangladesh's satisfaction in participating

The reaction of Adil Sumariwala, President of the Athletics Federation of India, after Neeraj Chopra's gold at the Tokyo Olympics was remarkable.  In a televised interview, his voice was sometimes haughty, sometimes proud.  There was a lot of confidence in Neeraj's performance.

Sumariwala was saying that Neeraj Chopra's Olympic success did not come in one day.  The gold medal is the result of their Athletics Federation's plan to select athletes from the grassroots for the last 18 years.  He was saying that day with a little anger, India won 14 gold in the last Asian Games.  Nine of its gold comes from various athletics events.  But at that time everyone's attention was less on the athletes.  But for 10 years he was the president of the Athletics Federation.  He knew that winning gold in Indian athletics was a matter of time.  Little by little they worked.  And that work has finally been recognized by the Athletics Federation of India.

Javelin thrower Neeraj made history for India in the Olympics.  India won his first individual gold medal in the track and field event.  After shooter Abhinav Bindra won gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, this is a personal gold medal at the Indian Olympics.

Now let's turn our eyes towards Bangladesh.  Bangladesh has been participating in every Olympic Games for 36 years.  But Bangladesh has a record of embarrassment and shame in the Olympics.  Despite being one of the most populous countries in the world, they do not have an Olympic medal.  However, Bermuda, a country with a population of only 64,000, won gold at the Tokyo Olympics in the women's triathlon.  Even the smallest country, San Marino, has won bronze in trap shooting this time.

The world's largest sporting event is the Olympics.  Before dreaming of winning a medal there, let's take a look at which other games Bangladesh takes part in.  South Asian Games (SA Games), Asian Games, Commonwealth Games — Bangladesh is regularly represented in three games.  But in the SA Games where Bangladesh can't win gold with its best in most of the games, the Olympics is a long way off.

Swimmers do not have success at the international level

It cannot be said that the players of Bangladesh are lagging behind for a specific reason.  Athlete coach Rafiq Ullah Akhtar cited a number of reasons, saying, "First of all, we need a fair sports policy, which is not available in our country at all."  Violence of political power is more in the stadium.  There is no initiative to bring out the hidden talents in the country.  The practice of inter-school and inter-university sports has decreased.  The Deputy Commissioner is the ex-officio in the district sports body.  It is a matter of luck in this country to have a sports-loving president.  So, like before, less players are coming out of the districts.  And everything is affecting the whole game. '

Lack of world-class sports infrastructure: A prerequisite for success in the Olympics is a world-class sports infrastructure.  But Bangladeshi players rarely get that facility for practice.  Mabia Akhter, a gold medalist in SA Games, often regrets not having a modern gymnasium.  Even after 50 years of independence, there is no velodrome in this country.  But cycling is an important sport in the Olympics!  Swimmers tired of complaining about electronic scoreboards.  Even though the national athletics is organized in Bangladesh in the grass field, there is less opportunity to know the timing of sprinters in the electronic scoreboard.

    No long term plans

Behind India's Olympic success lies a long-term plan by the country's central government.  The Government of India has started a project under this scheme called Target Olympic Podium Scheme since 2014.  In addition to training potential athletes at home and abroad, a large monthly stipend is being given to each of them.  The government of that country has also increased the allocation in the budget of the project called 'Khelo India'.  But the opposite picture can be said in Bangladesh.  Just before the start of the Games, the federations started a training camp at Namka Waste.  However, in 2010, Bangladesh won 16 gold medals in the Dhaka SA Games.

But last time in 2006 Colombo SA Games, Bangladesh won only 3 gold!  Mahfuza Khatun, a gold medalist swimmer in the SA Games, admits that there is no substitute for effective long-term practice.  This is a little too much for our players.
